In school, you may have to take a geography class. You may have to look at maps. Schools use two different types of maps, including the topographic maps and the geologic maps. They are very different. They may look a little alike. The geologic map will be more colorful than the topographic map. Topographic maps show elevation of an area using different shades or thicknesses of lines.

Geologic maps show the types of land and soil that are in that area. If you were looking at the various rocks in the area, you would use a geologic map and not a topographic map. If you wanted to find out how far the land is above sea level, you would use a topographic map.
