Blood clotting is an important process carried out by the body to prevent excessive bleeding when we have a wound. Platelets are a blood cell that races to the scene of the wound and works as a group to stop the bleeding by forming a clot over the injury.
The platelets work in conjunction with fibrin protein, which meshes together to make a bloody bandage. With time and healing, the surface clot or scab will dissolve or dissipate, become smaller, and your wound will fill in and heal.
Clots on the inside of the body can be caused by a myriad of things like obesity, smoking, oral contraceptives, and chronic inflammatory diseases. These clots are harmful in that they can block an artery and limit or stop the blood supply to vital organs, causing a stroke, heart attack, or death. Internal clots do not dissolve on their own, and they need the help of blood thinners to dissolve them.
