The correct answer to this question is the universe. The term closed system refers to any system with a boundary that does not allow any material from escaping or entering. While this is just a simple explanation of what a closed system is, there are other parameters that will help you determine what is an open or a closed system.

A cell can never be the answer because it is surrounded by a cell membrane that allows different kinds of materials into the cell. The Earth can never be an example of a perfect closed system because it receives interference from other bodies that make up the solar system.

For instance, the Earth can't shield itself from receiving heat and light from the sun. The correct answer is the universe because there is nothing outside the universe. As a result, it does not receive any outside interference.

The smallest closed system in the given examples is the universe. This might seem like a surprise especially since the other available choices are far smaller than the universe. A closed system is known to be a physical system that will not allow the transfer of the matter to go in and out.

If you would check the other available choices like the cell, the cell membrane will allow different molecules to go in and out depending on what they would be used for. The universe will not allow any matter to go in and out. All of the things that can be found in the universe are things that have been present there in the first place.

The cell is the basic structural, functional, and biological unit of all known organisms, and a cell is the tiniest component of life. Cells provide structure and support, assist in growth through mitosis, allow passive and active transport, produce energy, create metabolic reactions, and help with reproduction.

Cells are comprised of small parts that each have a specific job to perform so that the cell can serve its purpose. Cells are expected to carry out the essential processes of life. They consist of cytoplasm enclosed within a membrane, which has many biomolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids. Most plant and animal cells can only be seen under a light microscope. The number of cells in plants and animals vary from species to species.
