Horvitz and Phil Heyes continued to direct the show. This show was created by Simon Fuller. He had created another similar show called Pop Idol. The first season of American Idol aired in 2002 during the summer. It first aired on Fox and then was picked up by another station.

This idea from Fuller was based on another show that occurred in Britain. Today, people everywhere in the United States have heard of American Idol and many vow to be on the show. Many celebrities who are famous now got their start on American Idol.
