In the early stages of the nation of China, their military was not strong enough to take on other forces. But now they are strong and powerful. Yet Taiwan has great military equipment as well. They are strong within themselves too. But if China will attack Taiwan, they could not hold their ground.

It is possible that China doesn't want a civil war to begin, nor does it want to taint its image in the world. Among world leaders, they want to keep some level of peace and understanding because of trade. If they get too aggressive toward Taiwan, the world could turn against them.

China needs customers for their goods. Without their income from all over the world, they cannot survive as a nation and they will be forced into a difficult situation. It is primarily because of world trade that they are doing so well.
