Anesthesia is a substance that allows someone to be unconscious and not feel any pain during surgery which had radically improved the experience of surgery for patients and doctors. It has also gotten much safer over the years as physicians have become aware of potential complications. Anesthesia is generally safe, but there are sometimes side effects such as mental confusion, vomiting, nausea, and itching. These more common symptoms of anesthesia are not life-threatening. One rare but life-threatening side effect of Anesthesia is hyperthermia where a high fever results during the application of anesthesia. Although this is very uncommon, when it happens, it is usually with people with a history of heatstroke.
Another life-threatening complication is when an overdose of anesthesia is administered which can result in heart failure and brain damage. Anesthesia is not dangerous when used properly, but like any substance can become dangerous if too much of it is applied. These problems are very rare and can be avoided by taking appropriate measures to prepare for the surgery and talking to an anesthesiologist first.
