In-universe, Hellboy’s original name is Anung Un Rama which means “and upon his brow is set a crown of flame.” This probably implies Hellboy’s original purpose. Hellboy was the son of a demon Azzael and the witch Sarah Hughes. As a baby, Hellboy’s arm was cut off and replaced with the Right Hand of Doom, a device that had the power to destroy the world. The meaning of Hellboy’s original name suggests the malevolent intentions for which Azzael originally intended to use his half-human son. Hellboy’s name is in an infernal, nonhuman language of some sort, though it may also be an ancient human language. Mike Mignola, the character’s creator, probably did not have any particular language in mind, and was probably just thinking of a name that had mystery to it.

A well-meaning half demon whose true name is Anung un Rama, Hellboy was summoned from Hell to Earth as a baby. The character first appeared in San Diego Comic-Con Comics and has since appeared in various mini-series, one-shots, and intercompany crossovers.

Hellboy has been modified for two live-action feature films in 2004 and 2008. Hellboy works for the BPRD, which is an international nongovernmental agency, and for himself against dark forces including Nazi's and witches in a series of tales that roots in folklore, pulp magazines, and horror fiction. He can withstand powerful blows that would critically injure or kill a human.
