Certain foods seem to always appear at American social gatherings. These include hot dogs, burgers, turkey, mashed potatoes, apple pie and brownies among others. This has led to the question whether Americans have a national dish. There is technically no American national dish, but the contenders would probably apple pie, burgers, and brownies. Although burgers may be of Dutch or German origin, they are still very popular among Americans and most people think of burgers when they think of American cuisine.

Apple pie is a favorite American dessert, and someone might get the impression that it is unpatriotic for Americans to not eat apple pie judging from how it is revered. There are also regional foods that are popular in specific parts of the U.S. such as jambalaya in Louisiana and seafood in New England.
