Recent jellyfish swarms have created problems. The presence of stinging jellyfish has closed down many beaches, aquaculture operations are often affected fish populations have dwindled, and nuclear power plants have been shut down. In extreme cases with swarms, there can be more jellyfish than water.

Various types of environmental problems may promote the formation of jelly swarms. Jellyfish are carried along by the current, so if you see a jellyfish in the water, then you need to move out of the way. If you see a swarm of jellyfish, get out of the water immediately. If you see them on the beach, avoid them. Do not touch them for any reason.
