Pets are the best things (other than children) that come into our lives. It is recommended for the elderly to get pets as long as they can take care of them. This is because studies have shown that having a dog or cat allows the elderly person to live longer. It makes them happy and provides companion. Otherwise, the person may have been by themselves and become lonely.
The dog would provide the elderly person with a responsibility. As long as the person can take care of the pet, they should keep them. Pets like dogs do more than provide friendship and companionship. They also can provide protection. If someone is breaking into your home at night, the dog is usually the first to hear it. It could start barking and wake you up.
