Self-identity refers to an individual’s personality, character, demeanor, or disposition. It can also be referred to as an individual person as the object of his own reflective consciousness. Self-identity has all the answers to the question “who am I?” It helps an individual understand how they are different from others.

A person's self-identity can be expressed in different forms. It can be expressed in the way an individual speaks, dresses, talks, and how they carry themselves.

The main components of self-identity include self-esteem, body image, role performance, and identity. Self-identity plays an important role between an individual’s actions and the social structure.

Self-identity is the recognition of one characteristic of a particular individual. It is used to refer to the question, “Who am I?”

Self-identity has also been referred to as a way in which people perceive themselves to be; it is the way people use to describe themselves. It is a distinguished way of expressing oneself. It is made of concepts such as self-esteem, self-knowledge, self-referent cognitions, self-cognitions, or definition.

Self-identity also refers to a person’s role, specification, or behavior, the person’s identity may include the fact that he or she is married, a daughter, a teacher, a doctor, a farmer, or any label one uses to quantifies one’s image. When a person asks themselves the question "Who am I," that refers to their self-identity. It is who a person identifies. Examples include being a mother, a father, a teacher, or a pastor. The identity of a person is rooted in how they identify themselves. Identity is not just something a person is born with.

Instead, it is what a person knows and grows to become. Self-identity is constantly everchanging as life goes on. For example, a person may have identified as single all of their lives. Then, at 50 years old, they met the person of their dreams and married them. They became a spouse, and their identity changed to that.
