Couples celebrate Valentine’s Day to show true love and appreciation for each other. Valentine’s Day is a special day that is dedicated once a year and named after the Catholic priestSt. Valentine. St. Valentine lived in Rome during the 3rd Century. St. Valentine started to marry Roman soldiers in secret Christian ceremonies when Emperor Claudius was forbidding Roman soldiers to get married. He passed a law stating that these soldiers had to be wholly devoted to Rome and that getting married wasn’t allowed by them.

There were many stories told about St. Valentine, and over time, these stories grew into a legend. 200 years later, February 14th was proclaimed St. Valentine’s Day, and it was the poet Chaucer who was said to have linked St. Valentine with romantic love. It marked the beginning of the tradition of courtly love. Courtly love was a ritual to express admiration and respect in secret, but the ceremony changed with the times.
