There are three basic types of trains in the world. The earliest was the steam engine which literally had to carry lots of water and as the water was boiled, that steam would provide the power necessary for the heavy locomotive to be pushed forward. The second type is the diesel engine driven locomotives.

These diesel engines were used for quite a long time. In many parts of the world, diesel engines are still used to power the locomotives. But the negative aspect was that the diesel engine emitted so many pollutants. The third type is the modern electric engine driven trains. The electric trains are powered using the power lines just above the train and the contact with a special device delivers the electric power to the train. In some places like New York, they use what is called the "third rail" just below the train that carries the electric power.

It might seem like there are so many trains that you can find right now but there are three main types that are being used all over the world. These three main types are diesel, electric, and locomotive. There was a time when people also used coal trains but these trains are not being used now probably because of the things that people have discovered over the years.

The different trains also come with different speed. Some of the most luxurious trains cost a lot of money but there are also some that are merely used for transportation and can be very cheap to ride. It will be wise to be familiar with the train system especially when you are in a new country.

Not all of the trains are the same. If you have ever ridden on a train, it may be different than the trains that people take to work. They are the monorails, high speed railways, maglev, rubber-tired underground, funicular railways, cog railways and the atmospheric railways. They are used for different reasons.

Monorails are fast moving for those who are needing to travel quickly to places within the city. Many people take monorails to get to work because they go so fast. A high-speed railways are also fast, but they travel outside of the city. The maglev is a type of train based on how it moves. An atmospheric railway uses pressure to move and it appears like it is one of those trains that runs in amusement parks.
