The first aircraft to be used for commercial service took off on January 1, 1914. It actually operated between St. Petersburg and Tampa, Fla, and it covered a total distance of 34 kilometers in 23 minutes. The first passenger aircraft did not have the same look like the various types of aircraft we have today. The first passenger aircraft looked like a flying boat, and it was used for commercial service for just four months. It was designed by Thomas Benoist and he was assisted by Percival Elliott Fansler.

Fansler decided to work with Benoist on this project after he saw how fascinating it was, especially when he realized that the proposed aircraft could also land on water. After the completion of the project, it was Fansler that actually proposed a flight between St. Petersburg and Tampa, Fla. The first person to pilot the first passenger aircraft was Tony Jannus, and the first passenger to pay for this service was Abram C. Pheil.

The first passenger aircraft flew in 1914. It took the brave work of two men, Thomas Benoist and Elliott Fansler, to achieve this. This work was actually started by Thomas Benoist, but the exceptional nature of this project made Elliot Fansler fell in love with it, and he worked alongside Thomas Benoist.

The first passenger aircraft service took place between St. Petersburg and Tampa, Fla. The actual distance between the cities, if it were to be by road using any automobiles, would last nothing less than 20 hours. However, the flight from St. Petersburg to Tampa took place within 23 minutes, and it was piloted by Tony Jannus.

This service between these two cities lasted for only four months. And the first person to pay for this service was Abram C. Pheil. However, it is believed that this achievement of Elliot Fansler and Thomas Benoist was what set the foundation for the modern commercial aircraft being built today.

The first passenger flight took place in January 1914. The 21-mile journey took 23 minutes to complete, and the “boatline” as it was named, was piloted by the famed Tony Jannus. Jannus had already earned notoriety by his many exploits in the air, as well as the tests he did for the military and their aircraft.

The operation was only in business for around four months, but the headway made by the Florida pioneers opened the skyway to today’s modern airplanes. The idea for the flight line had been in the works for over a year before any real headway was made. The flight between St. Petersburg Florida, and Tampa Florida was a trip that took around four hours by boat. If the same trip were taken by the automobile, it would take roughly 20 hours to complete. By changing the venue to flight, the trip took just over 20 minutes to accomplish.

While the venture was not long-lasting, the interest in using the air for passenger travel was one that caught the attention of many. Being able to reach a destination in minutes rather than hours was a significant selling point to those who were interested in furthering the advancement of using aircraft to ferry passengers back and forth.
