To measure current, you must place the two leads of the ammeter in the circuit so that the current flows through the ammeter. The ammeter must become the part of the circuit itself. The only way to measure the current flowing through a simple circuit is to insert the ammeter into the circuit.

First, turn the meter on, then insert the probes into the correct connections. Set the main selector switch on the meter switch to the correct measurement type. Current measurements may be done with an array of testing instruments, but the most used pieces of test equipment for making current measurements is a digital multimeter.
