There are two main passageways to the lungs. Each passage is called a bronchus, so the plural is bronchi. In the majority of animals the windpipe, or trachea, is divided into two main bronchi. The bronchi begin when the trachea divides, forming the right bronhcus and left bronchus. When you take a breath through your nose or mouth, the air passes into the larynx.

From there, it travels through the trachea, which carries the air to the left and right bronchus. The bronchi are very important in the process of breathing, so any diseases affecting the bronchi will have some adverse effect on the human body.
