The gums are the portion of the soft tissue inside of the mouth. The gums surround the teeth and supply a seal around them. Different from the soft tissue linings of the lips and cheeks, most of the gums are tightly bound to the bone which helps resist the friction of food passing over them. It presents a barrier for the teeth with deeper tissue. The marginal gums are the edge of the gums surrounding the teeth in a collar like fashion.

The gums keep the teeth tightly bound in place — gums that are healthy fill and fit each space between the teeth. They hold tight to each tooth in that the gum surface narrows to "knife edge" thin at the free gingival margin. Healthy gums have a firm texture and resistant to movement, and the surface texture often inhibits surface stippling.
