If I am in a race and I am in the third place, and then I increase my speed, and I pass the person at the second place, then I am now in the second place because I have taken over the position of the person in that place.
All you need to do in a race in order to be the first is to be first, have great stability, be focused, and be determined so you can get to the desired position. When you pass the person in second place, you can increase your pace if second place is not your goal.
If your aim is the first place, you have to pass the person in the first place in order to take their spot; this will definitely need a lot of practice, hard work, and self-discipline.
