Carbon 14 is used for radioactive dating. It is an inherent part of organic beings hence it can be used to date many geological pieces and remains. It has a half-life of 5730 years. This makes it a reliable source for dating remains that are up to 75000years old. However, remains older than that will not have any carbon 14 left now.

Hence, in order to date them we need to resort to other radioactive isotopes such as potassium 40 that is an important dating aid as it has a half-life of 1.25 billion years. This means it can reliably date back to billions of years and estimate the age of the remains accurately.
