A spirometer is used by it being filled with medical grade oxygen and then being left full with the taps closed. The patient should then be sitting down and relaxed. the mouthpiece should be washed in antiseptic solution to sterilise it before being placed inthe patients mouth. The nose clip should be placed on the nose. The tap should then be opened to the atmosphere. A recorded to record the results should be started. The tap should then be turned to connect the patient to the spirometer. The normal breathing rate should be recorded for a minute before asking the patient to breathe in as deep as possible before returning to the normal breathing rate. This should then be repeated before switching off the machine and removing the mouthpiece and noseclip.
