It is the economics of supply and demand which dictates that when there is less supply, the price is higher. Brown rice is also healthier, which generally means it costs more. Brown rice features an oil-rich germ, which makes it more susceptible to becoming rancid than white rice, and therefore it should be stored in the refrigerator. It should be stored in an airtight container; brown rice will keep fresh for about six months.

It has half the shelf life of white rice. It is also a factor of where you choose to shop for food. People don't buy brown rice often which makes the volume of sales is lower, making the charge for the rice more for the shelf space and other fixed costs.
