You do not need an art degree to be an artist because the art degree does not determine how skilled or successsful you will be as an artist. There are many artists with degrees in Art but they did not really learn most of their skills in school.

Most of the successful artists do not have degrees in art. If you wish to improve your skills as an artist, all you need is practice.

A degree in art is not a bad idea, unnecessary or a waste of time and resourses but it does not determine your skill level or how successful you will become as an artist.
