There are five known phases of matter right now. These five are solids, liquids, gases, plasma, and Bose-Einstein condensates. It seems that people are shocked that there are more states of matter now as compared to before.

A few decades back, there were only three states of matter. The states or phases of matter are usually classified depending on their molecular activity. For example, solids usually have molecules that are not going around.

There are some people who may argue that there are 7 states of matter that are available if the plasma would be further classified. The additional two would be quark-gluon plasma and fermionic condensate.
