The process of joining the male and female sex cells of a plant is known as pollination. This is one of the major processes of sexual reproduction in flowering plants. This process results in the forming of seeds that will produce new plants. Just like in animals, the sexual reproduction of flowering plants is almost the same.

That means pollination is simply the coming together of both male gametes and female gametes. In flowering plants, flowers are important structures that carry these special sex cells. For instance, the pollen grains contain male gametes and are found on the anthers of flowers.

Also, ovules contain the female gametes, and the part of the flower that contains the ovules is the pistil. It is important to note that ovules are also found in the ovary. While some plants can self-pollinate, other plants need pollinating agents in order to bring the female and the male gametes together. After this, what happens next is fertilization.
