The shedding of the outermost layer of the skin is known as molting. This term is also known as sloughing or shedding. Scientifically, the term that describes the shedding of the outermost layer of the skin is known as desquamation.

In invertebrates, ecdysis is the term that explains the process by which some animals routinely cast off the outer layer of their skin. In humans, the shedding of the outermost layer of the skin is an indication of the healing process of any injured part of the body.

Desquamation can also occur due to diseases or internal disorders. At times, this happens naturally, when the body replaces aging skin cells with new ones. The shedding of skin is not really a noticeable process unless it is occurring where you can see it. The reason is that you might not even know that you are shedding your skin.

The term that refers to the shedding of skin is called molting. There are a lot of invertebrates that go through this because they would need to change their skin from time to time. Some invertebrates would need to remove a part of their body at some times of the year. There are also some that may do it at one point in their life’s cycle.

An animal would need to go through this in order to make way for the new skin or sometimes scales, or feathers that would grow on the body. This may also be experienced by some insects especially when they are growing and they would need to shed off what they have to give way to their new size.

Molting refers to the shedding of the outer skin, and as the organism grows, the outer skin does not grow with it. Instead, it disposes of it by molting, and an example would be a snake shedding its skin is called molting.

Shedding may include shedding or molting of body parts, and it can entail the peeling of diseased or non-diseased skin. The shedding of the skin is because of a loss of fluid through the shed skin. Skin shedding may begin in small areas, but it spreads to most of the body over time.

The skin is comprised of mainly protein, and the continual shedding of the skin can prevent the body from absorbing vital nutrients to sustain a healthy epidermis. Biologically, molting is the method in which an animal rids itself of part of its body either at specific periods of the year or at different stages in its life.
