What is a capability of a StandardSetController?

It extends the pre-built Visualforce list controllers PROVIDED BY SALESFORCE. It doesn't extend a custom controller.

Huh? How is D. not an answer? The first paragraph in the documentation for StandardSetController explicitly states that: "StandardSetController objects allow you to create list controllers similar to, or as EXTENSIONS OF, the pre-built Visualforce list controllers provided by Salesforce."
