Since words have been around for thousands of years it can get confusing when trying to describe the origin of a word because many of us don’t understand the places referred to in the explanation. For example, take the origin of the word death: “… is from the Old English “deað” meaning “death, dying, cause of death.” It is related to the Old Saxon “doth” and the Old Frisian “dath.”
Its origin is found in the Proto-Indo-European verbal stem “*dheu-” meaning “to die” with the suffix “*thus” which indicates an “act, process, condition.” Do you know what Old Frisian or Proto-Indo-European means? I don’t and I also don’t understand how this origin helps in our understanding of the word.
