Near the beginning of the 17th century in Virginia, the English settlers were experiencing terrible hardship and near starvation. They couldn't manage in the face of attack from native Indians, disease and hadn't established crops. Virginia was so isolated.

When a damaged Dutch ship arrived with a group of kidnapped Africans, the English swapped what they had for the labour the Africans would provide. Along with poor English, the Africans got food and accommodation in return for 7 years hard labour.
