He was best known for his flamboyant stage person and his four-octave vocal range. His voice escalated within a few bars from a deep, throaty rock-growl to tender vibrant tenor. He also had a profound sense of rhythm. He loved to tease and shock the audience.

Mercury's main prop onstage was a broken microphone stand, which after accidentally snapping off the massive base during an early performance. Freddie held the audience in the palm of his hand, and he took command of the stage. He displayed a highly theatrical style of performance.
