Yes, it has been declared that season 8 will be the last season of the series. The last episodes of the season were done in the summer of 2018 and fans cannot wait for next year when it will premiere. The season is reported to have 6 episodes, which will make the count of the total episodes of game of thrones reach 73.

The writers for the series are David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and will be responsible for the final ending that everyone is waiting for. It is a huge deal for both writers and a huge responsibility. The episodes are more of a movie style tan an episode style, which adds to the overall excitement.

It has been known for at least two years that HBO and the writers of Game of Thrones have announced that Season 8 will indeed be the last season of Game of Thrones. As a matter of fact the final filming of the episodes for Season 8 came to an end sometime during the middle summer of 2018. Season 8 will have a total of six episodes as part of the season and it will bring the total episodes of the entire Game of Thrones series to 73.

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are the two gentlemen who created the Game of Thrones series. It will be these two who will also be the main writers for Season 8. The early episodes basically stayed in line with the inspirational George R.R. Martin novels but since Season 6 all of the episodes were fresh material that was created by the writers of the series.

HBO executives had first planned to have a multi-hour exclusive movie for the Game of Thrones finale but after negotiations with Benioff and Weiss it was decided that Season 8 would be a series of 6 one hour movies. In various interviews, both Benioff and Weiss stated that they wanted the finale to be more of a mini-movie instead of a basic television series episode. Season 8 of Game of Thrones will be shown on HBO beginning sometime during 2019.
