The thoracic cavity lies above the abdomen in the human body. It is the cavity which contains the lungs and the heart along with the great vessels of the body. The thoracic cavity consists of the pleural membrane and the pericardial membranes in which the lungs and the heart is secured respectively.

The thoracic cavity works to protect the organs and also to provide the space for lung expansion that is necessary for breathing. It is basically, superior to the abdominopelvic cavity. The thoracic cavity is made out of ribs with intervening intercostal muscles that help to raise and depress the rib cage during breathing.
