An IP address is one in which contains numbers and sometimes periods in the number line. This is the address from which the computer is connected. Whenever a message is sent to someone like in an email, then the network must know where to send it. This is where the IP address comes into play. IP in the word IP address stands for Internet Protocol address.

There are two main things that the IP address does. These include identifying the actual address and locating another address. The protocol that is used to provide IP addresses to network computers automatically is the DHCP. DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. This is used to assign the IP address to the computer.
