Yes, a lot of people consider this as the greatest upset of all time. Just imagine UBMC winning over first-round seed Virginia. What makes this even more shocking is that UBMC is a 16 round seed. This is not the first time that an upset has occurred.
It has happened in different sports and other events so it is not actually surprising that something like this has happened. When all of the upsets that have taken place in basketball and other sports are taken into consideration, it can be considered one of the biggest upsets but not the biggest upset of all time. It would still depend on how much people like basketball and other sports.
University of Maryland Baltimore County and their huge upset over the overall number one seed University of Virginia was by far the biggest upset of all time in the history of sports. This was the first time in the history of the NCAA tournament where a first round seed was defeated by a 16 seed. What makes this upset so big is that not only was Virginia one of the four top regional seeds, they were the number one overall seed in the tournament. There have been huge upsets that have taken place in professional football, baseball, and basketball but they were no where near as big as the UMBC upset over Virginia.
Another fact that makes this upset so big is that UMBC did not win by just a couple of points or by a buzzer beater, they were able to beat UVA by 20 points. It was a total domination and one that Virginia certainly did not expect to happen. It is very hard to argue that University of Maryland Baltimore County and their upset win over Virginia in the 2018 NCAA Men's basketball tournament as the biggest sports upset of all time.
