English is the most spoken language in the world but it is still not the universal language. If you find yourself struggling to communicate using English or your native language, you need to install a translator app or a buy a translation book. You could also try to speak slowly as people will somehow understand the words you are saying. If you are asking for a direction, show the map or the name of the place you intend to go to.

It is best if you show them the local name or how it is written in that country. Use gestures such as eat, drink or sleep can be easily understood. You can also show a picture or a drawing of what you are saying. Be patient and thank them whether they have helped you or not.

Traveling to a foreign country where English isn't the main language can be scary. You should always be prepared for very few people to know English and not get aggravated when other means of communication must be used. Luckily, in this age, most people have smart phones that have apps that can translate for you. These applications are not always 100% but usually can get your point across or your question answered.

Sometimes, you may have to resort to drawing pictures or pointing to objects. Other times, certain words will sound similar and will be distinguishable. Just remember to grab a phrase book before you leave home—they have reliable translations and the locals will appreciate your attempt at their language.
