Krakatoa is an island volcano. It is located in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra in Indonesia. There is also a grouping of islands next to Krakotoa that came to be from a much larger island breaking apart during a huge volcanic explosion which occurred in 1883.

In 1927, a new island, Anak Krakatau, or “child of Krakatoa” emerged from the opening formed in the 1883 eruption. At this time there is live activity of this volcano. The child volcano has grown at an average rate of five inches per week since the 1950's. This is equal to an average growth about 22 and one half feet yearly. The island is still active today.
