It is a situation that no-one wants to encounter, but when a too much traffic floods the computer highway your particular transaction can be met with a denial of service. The system - usually a web server - may be targeted by a hostile agent.

DDoS stands for Distributed Denial of Service. As with any computer, DDoS attacks can cause harm to any domain and these attacks are very well known for completely shutting down sites. Basically what a DDoS attack entails is having a vast series and amount of computers to all go on a site at one time. What this is supposed to do is shut down the site or at least make it run slow and sometimes inoperative. Some people use botnet software where it can string together a wide range of computersthemselves and thus being able to launch the DDoS attack. These attacks are usually done using botnet software because it allows for a single person to be able to launch the attack all by themelves. There are known DDoS hacker groujps in which they recruit scores of users to log on to a site at one time to launch the DDoS attack.
