This test is known as an anagram. All the letters in a word are rearranged so that it is difficult to recognise the word used. This example muddles up the letters in the word 'parakeet' and so the answer to the question is BIRD. A parakeet only falls into that category. To get better at this sort of task you need to be dealing with words daily but it is something that differentiates those who can visualise and translate rapidly from those who cannot.
