Better for whom? Communists would argue that by a rigorous sharing out of assets, all are better off. In a democracy it is easy for there to be side discrepancies between rich and poor, and for a billionaire to use a free bus pass if over 65 years, whereas a homeless person may not be able to get a pass without an address even if over 65. So the communist would argue that such a situation could not exist under communism.
However, communist countries like USSR had their fair share of corruption and when a change of regime alerted residents to the goodies available in the West they were very quick to seek them. Communism looks best on paper but no country appears to have made it really work for the economy or for those living in it.
Since I happen to live in a democracy, I believe it is much better than communism. By living in a democracy, I can own property. I can vote for whichever political party I want and I can protest and express my freedom of speech if I so desired. In a country where communism is practiced the government would take control of all the capital and industry in an effort to achieve economic equality.
Also a communist government does not tolerate dissent. If you look at the countries in the world today there are really only 5 communist countries: China, North Korea, Cuba, Laos and Russia. From what I’ve seen and heard, I would never want to live in any of those countries.
