For those who are not aware, the blackout period is the time when the surviving spouse will have the ability to receive the needed benefits. The widower will be able to receive income until such time when the youngest child is 16 years of age. If the child is disabled, this may be extended up to the age of 22. The blackout period is the time when the widower will not be able to receive any benefits from the age of 40-60.

This is usually a problem for spouses especially if they have never had a job and they do not have their own benefits to use. The widowers are recommended to get life insurance so they will have money to spare during the blackout period.
