Never Too Much reached number 33 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, number four on the US Billboard Dance Club Songs chart, and number one on the US Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, as well as reaching the top 50 on other international charts.

The song is also on Luther Vandross' greatest hits album The Ultimate Luther Vandross, released in 2001. It received a nomination at the 24th Grammy Awards in 1982 for "Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male," although it did not win.
