The success of the armed forces depends both on the commander and the troops. A commander must have excellent leadership and decision making skills in order for the troops to respect and trust their commander. A commander must also know if their troops are mentally and physically ready for battle.

How could any soldier follow an order to put himself or herself in harm’s way and risk being killed if they didn’t respect, trust, and believe in their commander? Similarly, the commander needs to be able to depend on his or her troops to follow orders so the mission, whatever it may be, can be accomplished successfully.
