In 1900, the Summer Olympics were held in Paris, France. Unlike the Olympics today, these events took part over a few months instead of a few weeks. Today, there are opening and closing ceremonies, but back then they did not have any ceremonies to begin the Olympics. The first games began in mid-May and continued until the end of October. Fewer than one thousand athletes attended and participated and there were fewer than 20 sports at the time. Some of the events were car and motorcycle racing as well as cricket.

One controversy that took place is when the United States marathon runners got angry when two French runners were given medals when it was believed that they took a short cut instead of running the entire route. Also, this was the first time a woman won an event.
